Interview Experience (20) :Gopal Sonkar

I am fortunate to share in the group my 3rd interview experience, organized by Bank of Maharashtra held at Mumbai on July 09, 2012.

Documents verified at 11.00AM
They needed character certificate signed separately by any two reputed person such as Doctors, Lawyers, Principals etc.

Interview started at 12.30PM

There were 3 gentlemen in the panel.

Greeted everyone separately.

M2: You have done your Bachelors of Commerce?
Myself: Yes Sir.

M2: (paused for a while then asked) are you working somewhere?
Myself: Yes Sir. Working at SITPL as an Accounts Executive.

M2: That's great. That is a reputed TV Channel. Nirmal Baba is still coming over it?
Myself: Yes sir. He used to... but now I think has stopped. (everyone smiled)

M2: What is Current Ratio?
Myself: Sir it's a ratio of Current Assets to the Current Liabilities. Current Assets upon Current Liabilities.

M2: What should be the ideal ratio?
Myself: Sir, should not exceed 1. Means Current Liabilities should not exceed the Current Assets.

M2: What does it mean if a company's Current Liability is more than it's Current Assets?
Myself: Sir, it means company's liquidity position is not good. It's not stable.

M2: Which is the most liquid assets?
Myself: Cash

M1: Tell me about your family background?
Myself: Answered.

M1: If we have transferred you somewhere with whom your father will stay?
Myself: I will take him along with me.

M2: What is your current salary?
Myself: Answered.

M2: When you are working for a reputed TV channel why do you wish to change your job?
Myself: Sir, it's a private limited company and BOM is a nationalized public sector bank. Bank provides lots of growth opportunities not only to the freshers but also to the experiences people.

M2: That media firm also provides many growth opportunity.
Myself: Sir, but still there are differences in various aspects of both the 2 entities.

M2: Do you know what is KYC?
Myself: Yes sir. It's Know Your Customer... a guidelines set by RBI to know the persons who are maintaining a bank a/c with bank. In this while an opening an a/c with bank, bank asks for address proof, photo identity proof as well as a reference from a present customer of the bank who is operating his account since 3-5 years.

M2: You have salary a/c in which bank
Myself: HDFC Bank

M2: Apart from this do you have any other bank account?
Myself: Sir, I also have an A/c with Bank of Baroda.

M2: If you have visited the branches... what are the differences have you observed?
Myself: Sir, in terms of amenities, both are almost same.

M2: Anything else?
Myself: Sir, I have observed that BOB is having more customers than HDFC. Whenever I go to HDFC Bank there is no que to be maintained. Means they have few customers with them. Whenever I visit the BOB I see that there is a huge line for transactions to be made. They maintain it through token system.

M2: What is the reason that BOB has more customers comparing with HDFC?
Myself: Sir, HDFC is a private sector bank in which an individual has to maintain a minimum balance of Rs. 10000 which is not affordable for common people. They charge Rs. 350 against every cheque dishonor. They charges almost Rs. 750 for not maintaining a minimum balance. Plus the also charges transaction charges against penalty.

M2: Is it? That's very high amount. Even I was not aware of that.
Myself: Yes sir.

M2: Do you know what are the benefits offered by Banks which is not offered by companies?
Myself: Sir, DA, HRA, PF, Medical these are the common things which I know.

M2: Anything else apart from this?
Myself: Sorry Sir.

M2: Do you know that bank offers 1% more interest to employees on the deposits?
Myself: Sorry Sir, was not aware of this.

M2: And bank offers loan to its employees at concessional rate of interest.
Myself: Yes Sir. I have heard it somewhere.

M2: What is Base Rate.
Myself: Sir, base rate is a rate below which a bank is not in a position to lend money. In case of BOM it' presently 10.50%

M2: What is Prime Lending Rate?
Myself: Sir, it's the rate of interest for prime customers. A bank can lend money to customers at prime rate who are creditworthy in the views of bank. It has been replaced by base rate.

M2: Who determines the PLR?
Myself: Not sure sir. But may be Banks themselves.

M2: What is money laundering? Have you ever heard about it?
Myself: Yes Sir. It's an activity by a person for tax evasion. They disclose their entire income in the books of a/cs for the purpose of saving tax. That's evasion for tax.

M3: What are the measures RBI has taken to control recent inflation?
Myself: Sir, CRR, SLR are the mains. But that has remain constant for since some period ago. They try to adjust it through increase in Repo and Reverse-repo rate. Apart from this there have been some fiscal policies which have been announce by govt.

They confirmed each other if any one has questions for me. Then allowed me to leave.

M1- haha...zaroor?..very good.to bolo aapne pilot training finish kar le?
Me-nahi sir.initial training ki thi..height requirement se 5 cm kam hun .to maine 2 saal wait kiya sir...lekin bada nahi.to maine chod deya sir
M1 - to yahan pe percentage kyun mentioned hai?
Me- sir , maine written exams clear kar deye the sir.
M1-oh.ok...to boleye dindigul kis le leye famous hai?

M1- why didn't u do any degree after ur 12th?
Me - sir , since my childhood...i have been hearing from people tat either they do engeneering or medicals....so i was sure not to do both....becoz i wanted me to be identified separately among 10 people.

Me -.i told around 10 responsibilites..he said...1 main res as per management..

M3- ok...if ur boss is telling tat they need this much deposits....wat will u do.
Me-.sir....i'll ask my husban'd and dad's frnds...to put some deposits and will tell them abt the schemes..
sir....my mom is already doing it...with the neighbours.....

Ans: Yer sir. It is crossselling for banks. our bank has tie up india first life insurance co. ltd.
m2: Currently what is reason behind down trend of stock market?
ans: Some reforms like GST, FDI in Multibrand Retail is not in progress and Finance Minister has imposed GAAR on FIIs. And FII did not like that.
m2: what is full form of GAAR
Ans: general anti avoidance rule.
m3: How to operate demat account:
Ans: i told

I must say Panel was so Candidate Friendly and whole of my interview was in Regional Language i.e. Gujarati

My reporting time was 9 AM...at 12 noon my documents were verified.We were to write an essay on our regional language.

There were three people at my interview panel.I am going to refer them as M1,M2 AND M3.

Me-May i come in sir?

M1-yes plz.

Me-Good afternoon sirs

M1-good after.plz take ur seat.So , Ms.Rekha wats ur qualification?

Me- I have applied on the basis of 12th std

M1-Ok ,u have mentioned pilot training in ur application.can u tell abt it

Me- sure sir.after my 12th std,i ws not interested in eng or medical.So i did my pilot training

M1- how much did it cost u?

Me-10 lakhs sir.My father had saved 10 lakhs for my education and marriage.So i requested my parents to invest in my flying

M1-So,why didn't u continue with flying.

Me-Sir.flying was my passion.i wanted to experience adventure.i did it.also i am not medically eligible to work as a pilot.So.it was only passion.

M1-Oh...really. so can u tell abt ur parents

M1-how will u be working in rural areas since ur the only daugther?

Me- Sir , i have been in philiipines all alone for 2 years.I can handle it sir

M2-so wat r u doing now?

Me-sir,i am doing my 2nd year BBA banking.

M2- what r ur subjects?

Me-said

M2-so,since ur studying economics,wat kind of economy does india have??

Me-Sir,developing economy

M2-ya...but wat kind of controlled....or...

M3-who is gov of RBI?

Me-said

Me-i laughed as he was joking....(damn-- i shud have immediately said that not as a pilot but as your bank employee)..

Dont know wat will be result.....any suggestion guys....like how shud i convince them that i wish to work in bank only....flying was only my passion...

7. whats the need of nationalisation?

me : before nationalisation banks was only for upper sections of society but now it is possible for a common man to avail its benefits!

8. you have done physics, what is newtons law of motion?

i told two out of three laws!

9. third law?

me : sorry sir, i donot remember , i studies them 3 years back, i dont remember that much!

10. i studied 30 years back but i still remember! (and he smiled, then i smiled too)

11. what is a balance sheet and what are the liabilities and assets of the bank?

told correctly!

told only one (rabindra nath tagore)

Me----Actually sir, Banking is one of the most booming industries….. The corporate level exposure, promotion scopes & growth opportunities what ever I will get in this organization, I don’t think so I wil get in my current job…..

M1----But u r wasting the money of government..u r BTech…U already working in your field…then why u r coming in bank..

Me--- sir, but promotion scopes is also imp for me……

M2--- tell that u require agovt job..thats why u r here

M1--- U can start your own industry

Me—Sir…starting of new industry is not a single handed work…u require a team & big finance as well

Me--- Now I confused ….& told drill machine ( Why don’t know…munh me aa gaya aur nikal gaya..)

M1--- U have lots of options..like pesticides, tractor etc..etc..

Me—Sir…Pesticide companies require BSC Agriculture..they never hire BTech fellows

There are so many scopes available for Mechanical, Electrical & IT engineers..as each & every organization require these…..But I have to accept that for Agriculture engineer there are only two fields..one is Irrigation & second is tractor

M2---- But Tractor is very big field

Me--- yes sir..

Madam--- But u have done BTech……u may have at least some vision for that..

Me---- Actually M’am…when I was in 12th ..at that time I wanted to be doctor..want to go in medical line..but I didn’t get enough marks to get admission….then I took admission in Btech...b/z this was locally available course & I knew that I will get atleast some job after completion of BTech

M2—Ok..then u get Pvt job..ok…. So why u didn’t go for MTech?

Me--- B/z sir I require to do job to support my family

M2—Ok then u applied for any scholarship during Btech

Me—No

M2—Why..there is gud scholarship available for from ICAR..

Me—I didn’t have knowledge about that at that time sir..Also I was on free sheet…and fee was only 3000 per semester…

M2—That’s why we r telling that you are wasting money of government..

Interview Experience (13) :Bharath

Date: 12^th january 2012, Hyderabad

Exam for SBI PO posts was held in july 2011. It comprised of an objective paper comprising maths, english, logical reasoning and general knowledge. The written paper comprised of letter writing and precise writing. After a long wait of 7 months results were announced and I was shortlisted for interview.

                On 12th jan 11 AM I was called for interview to SBI Headquarters, hyderabad. I reached their campus around 10:30. It was a sprawling campus resembling a mini hitech city. A total of 18 people were called for interview. I had to wait for over two hours to get my document verified.  After which, they provided us lunch coupons and asked us to have lunch at their officers mess. After a quick meal, we were taken to a conference hall for group discussion. Again we were made to wait for another 2 hours as interviewers were busy interviewing people from morning batch.

                The conference hall was huge with state of art equipments. All of us were provided with a table mic. It was more a test on public speaking than a group discussion, as the format allowed no scope for countering others points. Everyone were given 2 minutes to talk on topic in 1st round and another 1 minute to conclude in 2nd round. The topic given was “villages in India are its strengths or weaknesses” . I said villages were once a strength and now have become our weakness and gave a few suggestions to convert our weakness into stength. After group discussion, the interviews started

                I was number 4 on list and hence didn’t have to wait for long . The interview board comprised of 4 old men. Unlike a traditional interview setting, this room had sofas on four corners of room and each was seated in one corner. I was made to sit on a chair in middle of the room.

Chairman: Welcome . please sit down.

Me: thank you sir

Chairman: So you have completed your graduation in 2010. What were you doing since then?

Me: I have been preparing for civil services

Chairman: What is the status now?

Me: I have written the mains and results are yet to be announced

Chairman: good. So if you get  through civil services, You would prefer it over this job

Me: Yes

Chairman: Did you write any other bank exams?

Me: Yes I did. I managed to clear the exam for a couple of banks but I couldn’t attend interview as they were too close to mains exam

Chairman: Ok. Do you know about lothal?

Me; Yes sir, it is a harappan site. It was an important port town

Chairman: Name some harappan sites in India

Me: Mohenjodaro

Chairman: its not in India

Me: sorry sir, its in pakistan. In India we have kalibangan, ranikhet

Chairman: Tell me one more

Me: I am not able to recollect now

Chairman: Name the person who designed delhi

Me: New delhi was designed by Lutyens

Chairman: Ok . what about chandigarh, rock garden is there na?

Me: I don’t know. I have stayed in delhi so I have an idea about it

Chairman: Ok. Name the tribes in meghalaya

Me: Mishmi…..gharo, khasi

Chairman: There is one more without which answer is incomplete

Me: I am not able to recollect not

Chairman: Its jaintia

Member 1: Can you give me technical definition of semi conductors?

Me: I can’t give technical definition but I can explain it

M1: ok please explain

Me: It is a material which has very low band gap and hence can be bridged easily and made conductive. So it can act as a conductor in certain circumstances

M1: Can you tell me how much that band gap should be?

Me: I don’t remember

M1: atleast resistivity

Me; No sir

M1: what about insulator?

Me: I ddon’t remember the band gap range

M1: Ok. Can you name a nobel prize winner who was born in almora?

Me: hargobind khurana?

M1: No.

Me: Am sorry sir. I don’t know

M1: name some nobel prize winners from India

Me: The latest was venkatraman

Chairman: what venkatraman?

Me: venkatraman ramakrishna

Chairman: no no tell me proper name

Me: I am not sure

M2; What is this? You have cleared prelims. You should saying these takatak

Me: sir the exam pattern has changed. It is more analytical and less bookish now

Chairman: but still, this is general knowledge. You will be asked these in civilis interview as well

Me: yes sir. I shall update myself in future

Me; No sir economist amartya sen

M1: that’s what. Pandit amartya sen

Me: eh??

Chairman : what he meant was you must address him as Dr Amartya sen. He has accomplished so much

Me: yes sir, he is professor emeritus, renowned economist

M2: Who is Rajat gupta? Do you know him?

Me: Yes sir. He is facing allegations of insider trading

M2: who was he helping?

Me: Rajaraman

M2: raja..what

The interview was for around 10 minutes. I left for home around 4 PM .

It was more a quizzing session than an interview. I have a feeling they have struck me off as my priority is civil services. Hence they didn’t ask anything related to banking or my background.

Anyways lets hope for the best. The results are expected in a months time.

Result: On 17th Feb 2012 results were out. Much to my surprise, i have been selected!

Q 1 Tell me something about yourself?

A 1 My name is Neelam Singla from Chandigarh. I am B.Sc. graduate with 75% marks. After that I did MBA with 60%.

Q 2 After B. Sc Math with 75% why  you did not opt for M. Sc Math?

A 2 Sir I have interest in Management, so i opted for MBA. Moreover i have good managerial and leadership skills.

Q 3 From where you completed your MBA?

A 3 I have completed my PGDM (in Marketing) + MCA (Marketing of Computer mgt) from Singhbad Institute of Management, Pune.

Q 4 Have you completed your PG in distance education?

A 4  No, this was my regular course.

Q 5 How many P are there in Marketing?

A 5 4 Ps Product, Place, Price, Promotion + 3 Extended P’s for Services i.e. People, Process, Physical Evidence.

Q 6 Any particular subject which you have interest in?

A 6 Yes sir I have interest in International Politics.

Q 7 Ok, What is EU?

A 7 EU is the name given to European Union. It is a union of 27 independent member states which are located in Europe. Its Currency is Euros.

Q 8 What is SAARC?

A 8 SAARC South Asian Association for Regional Coopeartion. It came into being in 1985. It has 8 member nations.

Q 9 What is Euro currency?

A 9 Euro is the currency of Euro Zone. Out of 27 EU members, only 17 have Euros as their currency. It is the second largest Reserve Currency.

Q 10 What is currency of US, UK, Britain?

Me: sir i passed my 12th in Maths+Biology. i prepared for medical exams but couldn't qualify. and in the same year i also gave engineering entrance exam. i was left with two choices either to go for Dental course(BDS) or engineering(BE). at that time i thought engineering will be a better option for me.as it will provide me with lots of opportunity to work in different sector.and i think i was correct as i am sitting for a bank officer interview. and in such case a college repo was not an important issue for me.i took admission in that college on self belief.that i will do something on my own. but that college is a money crunchier and fraudester for those who desires for a job from campus placements.
